Section 144 imposed in Ahmedabad to prevent swine flu as toll mounts to 231 in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad district collector invoked the Criminal Procedure Code's Section 144 here on Tuesday, prohibiting mass gatherings without prior permission in order to prevent swine flu, an official statement stated.

"It has come to our notice that swine flu cases have been on the rise in Gujarat including Ahmedabad. The virus, which causes swine flu, is contagious and generally infects people by entering through nostrils and mouth mostly at crowded places," the Ahmedabad district collectorate statement said.

The move has come after Gujarat registered more than 230 swine flu deaths, which include more than 50 fatalities in Ahmedabad, since January this year.

The number of positive cases swine flu recorded in Gujarat is 3,527 and the disease has caused the highest number of deaths in Gujarat compared to other states in the country.

However, the Collector has exempted people gathering at marriages and death processions from Section 144.

If public events cannot be called off or postponed, organisers would have to take prior permission also have to ensure that proper care is being taken to stop the spread of swine flu, like providing masks to all people as well as dispose off these masks after their use, the statement said.

It added that organizers of such events should display big billboards with swine flu prevention measures like washing of hands with soap at regular intervals.

Meanwhile, swine flu on Tuesday claimed 12 more lives in Gujarat, taking the total number of deaths due to the H1N1 virus to 231 so far even as 190 new positive cases were detected in a day.

"Gujarat has recorded 12 swine flu deaths and 231 new cases today. While the total number of deaths has climbed to 231, and that of positive cases to 3,527 since January this year," according to an official statement issued by Gujarat government.

Because the people have grown complacent, the practice of open-defecation has become a norm and our continued silence on the issue just makes matters worse. 

We need to take up awareness projects, fund programmes for building sanitation facilities and make the people understand the ill-effects of open-defecation. 

And the people over at Sanifresh are already doing their bit, one toilet at a time. 

They plan to construct separate toilets for girls in schools as well as community toilets in villages for women.

Besides having initiated awareness campaigns about the health risks associated with open defecation, they plan to use their sales proceeds to build and maintain toilets in model villages.

જોરાપારાના નિવાસી સાહૂ અહિં વર્ષોથી પૌંઆની વેચે છે. તેમને પૂછતા સાહૂ કહે છે કે સવારે 6થી 10 અહિં પૌઆ વેચું છું અને ઘર ખર્ચ નીકળી જાય છે. તેમના ઘણા સંબંધીઓ શહેરમાં અલગ અલગ જગ્યાએ નોકરી કરે છે.   
 
તેમનો દિવસ સવારે 4 વાગ્યે શરૂ થાય છે. ઘરે પૌંઆ બનાવીને લગભગ સાડા છ વાગ્યે ચોકમાં લાગી લગાવે છે. તે રોજ લગભગ 20 કિલો પૌંઆ બનાવે છે. તે લોકોને દિવસના લગભગ 400 ડીશ પૌઆ ખવડાવે છે. વર્ષોથી 20 રૂપિયા ડીશના હિસાબે દિવસના 8000 રૂપિયા કમાઈ લે છે. અને મહિને લગભગ 2 લાખ રૂપિયા પાડે છે.

Ahmedabadi Celebrate Human Rights Day Everyday

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted on 10 December 1948. The date has since served to mark Human Rights Day worldwide. The High Commissioner for Human Rights, as the main UN rights official, and her Office play a major role in coordinating efforts for the yearly observance of Human Rights Day. The day commemorates the work of human rights organizations and all those people with consistent efforts and defend the human rights worldwide.
The existence of Human Rights Day came into effect when United Nations Assembly has adopted the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was the first global enactment for human rights. All over the world many people among them some are renowned and some are anonymous whether in groups, organization or being alone working towards the campaign of Human Rights in order to end discrimination. Many governmental and non-governmental organizations are also actively participated in various activities of Human Rights Day so that people everywhere of the world learn about their Human Rights.

The United Nation's General Assembly proclaims the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction. The Human Rights Day promotes and spread awareness about the following articles under UDHR:

• All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

• Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

• Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. 

• No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

• No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. 

• Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.

• All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law.

Human Rights Day in India

In India, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been constituted under Human Right Act 1993. This has been the milestone of promotion and protection of human rights in Indian society. In India the celebration of Human Rights Day on December 10, gives us an opportunity to judge the accountability to human rights standards. The day is also celebrated to promote the universal human rights: to live and to do so peacefully. Human Rights issues in India relate to trafficking of women and children, food security, right to education and health, disappearance of persons, displacement of persons due to disasters, conflicts and development, child labor, custodial deaths, violation of Human Rights in prisons and the disabled etc. On these issues, the Commission is not only dealing with individual cases but also issuing policy guidelines for implementing agencies.

TImes Of India, Raahgiri Day , the weekly event that closes city streets to cars to celebrate walking, biking, music-making, and socializing, has expanded beyond Ahmadabad, India. It was unlike any other Sunday morning as hundreds of Amdavadis came together on the second Raahgiri Day in November. The stretch of CG Road — from Panchvati to Swastik Crossroads — which is known for its traffic snarls and loud blare of car horns, was transformed into a happening park of sorts as the young and old came together at the crack of dawn to participate in a number of fun activities or simply to socialize. 

As the young ones enjoyed a ride on their cycles and scooters, tried their hands at various crafts and even engaged in sports activities like the zumba, the older ones shook a leg to foot-thumping music, socialized with each other and shared some gossip while walking on the street. The Raahgiri Day, a mission supported by Times Of India to reclaim the streets for citizens and drive urban life on to the green path, brought a new life to CG Road.
Not just that, while some kids chucked the mobile phones to play traditional games like nagolchuand pagathiya, some school kids also took to spreading awareness about the Swachch Bharat campaign and an eco-friendly lifestyle.
