30 Crore Indian Women Still Have To Defecate In The Open. Will The Shame Reach Before The Stink?

When Prime Minister Modi, speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, stressed the need for proper sanitation and talked about building toilets, many felt uncomfortable at how "inappropriate" the stage was.

But can they refute the reality of open defecation in India?

Can they deny that women in our country are still forced to defecate out in the open? 

Can they honestly say that the dignity of an Indian woman is being upheld when she has to step out late at night or in the early hours of dawn to relieve herself?

According to WHO and UNICEF studies, almost 48% of urban and 65% of the rural population defecate in the open.

A national survey conducted by AC Nielsen and NGO Plan India in 2012 found that 23% girls drop out of school after reaching puberty.

A senior police official in Bihar has said that 400 women would have "escaped" rape last year if they had toilets in their homes.

These women face the threat of snakebites, unhygienic conditions, diarrhea and violence. Every single day. 

Problems which can be fixed. Just by building a toilet.

This is where we need to step in.

Because the people have grown complacent, the practice of open-defecation has become a norm and our continued silence on the issue just makes matters worse. 

We need to take up awareness projects, fund programmes for building sanitation facilities and make the people understand the ill-effects of open-defecation. 

And the people over at Sanifresh are already doing their bit, one toilet at a time. 

They plan to construct separate toilets for girls in schools as well as community toilets in villages for women.

Besides having initiated awareness campaigns about the health risks associated with open defecation, they plan to use their sales proceeds to build and maintain toilets in model villages.

Because now the issue is no longer just about hygiene, it's a question of dignity. Of our women and their right to privacy.

જોરાપારાના નિવાસી સાહૂ અહિં વર્ષોથી પૌંઆની વેચે છે. તેમને પૂછતા સાહૂ કહે છે કે સવારે 6થી 10 અહિં પૌઆ વેચું છું અને ઘર ખર્ચ નીકળી જાય છે. તેમના ઘણા સંબંધીઓ શહેરમાં અલગ અલગ જગ્યાએ નોકરી કરે છે.   
 
તેમનો દિવસ સવારે 4 વાગ્યે શરૂ થાય છે. ઘરે પૌંઆ બનાવીને લગભગ સાડા છ વાગ્યે ચોકમાં લાગી લગાવે છે. તે રોજ લગભગ 20 કિલો પૌંઆ બનાવે છે. તે લોકોને દિવસના લગભગ 400 ડીશ પૌઆ ખવડાવે છે. વર્ષોથી 20 રૂપિયા ડીશના હિસાબે દિવસના 8000 રૂપિયા કમાઈ લે છે. અને મહિને લગભગ 2 લાખ રૂપિયા પાડે છે.

'Roy' Movie Review by Ahmedabad Attitude

Movies are meant to be a reflection of our reality, and that’s what debutant director Vikramjit Singh explores through his staggeringly gorgeous canvas in ‘Roy’. A movie that starts off promising to be a heist film, but ends up slipping into an emotional drama about self-discovery.

It’s a classic case of how we rarely (almost never) practice what we preach. Singh’s stunning cast voice filmmaking tips that the director blatantly ignores.

"A story must end when it needs to. There’s no point stretching it," says his dazzling moviemaker Ayesha Amir, but Singh’s own ‘Roy’ runs into an exhausting 156 minutes of screen time.

At another point, his droopy-eyed filmmaker Kabir announces, “I don’t want to waste your time.”

Whether this was as much about Singh’s journey as it is of Kabir’s, one can never tell, but a line about “how did I make this film?” possibly exposes a connect.

‘Roy’ is textured and tinted marvelously by cinematographer Himman Dhamija, but Singh’s story is unable to lend it enough substance. Had Dipika Kalra exercised ruthlessness on the editing desk, it would’ve tipped the odds in its favour.

Concealed under puffs of smoke and a fedora hat, Kabir’s journey comes alive as he hits the keys of his antique typewriter and creates a sinful world of deceit and chase.

His Roy is designed on a celebrated thief, one who caught the director’s fancy when he was a young boy.

The story, now in its third stage, culminates in Malaysia, where he chances upon a charming inspiration.

Singh structures his narrative around Kabir’s reality and Roy’s infamous life. Their stories are intrinsically weaved, and swapped cleverly, to establish contradictions and revelations.

“We humans always want to steal someone else’s life and live it as our own,” hints the suave, leather-jacketed Roy. Singh further details how the men live magnificently as poster boys, even when they choose a life of secrecy.

The exercise appears tried and tested, and one that holds an uncanny resemblance to Hollywood veterans. Yet, Singh holds his own.

However, the transition isn’t clear, and often complicating. Even the conflicts that emerge appear inconsequential.

He uses a watch and cigar to link both the lives, but their actual relevance isn’t explained adequately.

Arjun Rampal conveniently hides his broody face under a hat, and an unkempt beard. When he’s not wasting much of his screen time sipping iced drinks, he’s clouding the frame with his puffs. The camera feeds off Arjun’s striking looks, but unfortunately Singh doesn’t flesh out his complexities and vulnerabilities convincingly.

Between all this, he finds time to romance, with the entertainment reporters pitching his current flame to number 23. Yet, we don’t sense any real chemistry between him or his squeeze.

Jacqueline Fernandez plays two parts, one of a discerning filmmaker, and other of a pretty actress Tia. Apart from the varying wardrobe and hairdo, there’s not much distinction in their portrayals, and that’s probably planned to unfold a bigger reality, but it never translates cleverly.

Ranbir Kapoor lends mystery to Roy, and never lets off his guard. It’s unfortunate though that his character isn’t permitted to thrive.

‘Roy’ is a marvelously shot movie, no doubt, and holds immense promise, but never quite sums up into anything of substance.

We only wish it was more about the heist, and less about the heart.

All India Bakchod (AIB) Knockout Controversy [REACTIONS]

Your commentI clearly enjoyed the show but guys this is not the kind of program that should be available in the Public Domain like Youtube. Clearly AIB, Participants, Organisers and also those who went to see the show have not ensured that children, youth of our Country are not exposed to this kind of content and therefore they are suppose to sing in front of Law Enforcement agencies. Good thing is that hypocrisy of lot of people have been exposed and they cannot complain in future if somebody gives them their own medicines.

No doubt the show made me laugh. No doubt the people did have guts to face it publicly. But these things are good within a small group of like minded. But taking a public platform may not be a right. The good things are always good but negative things may give us initial kick but they harm us in the long run. We must understand what we are initiating in society as a part of this and what we are passing on to the next generation. Deepika recently had big problem with a news paper writing something about her but she herself was an object of making fun on her personal life. She found AIB cool just because Ranveer was there but was hurt when a news paper wrote something in similar lines. That clearly shows everything is not cool to everyone and the same thing need not be cool at different time. Personally I laughed at jokes but still I was questioning did we really need something like this? Let these dirty items be in their personal space and let the public platform be how it should be.

 AIB Knockout Roast of Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor has become a hassle of morality to a few launching their guns of wisdom to people. And while the platform of extreme madness and complete fun has taken down the particular show from YouTube, the act of criticism is attracting a lot of criticism in itself.

After Ashok Pandit, member of the current CBFC committee has garnered flaks of another level when he posted a filthy tweet regarding Karan Johar and her mother in the light of the incident; several other Bollywood stars have come out in open to share their views on the same.  

Actors like Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone who were seated in the front row during the show, took it to twitter to express their rage over the entire hoopla.

Alia Bhatt who is probably the most sporting Bollywood celebs we have today, wrote #AIBKnockout !!!!!!! What an unreal roast .. Clap clap clap @karanjohar arjunk26 @RanveerOfficial @AllIndiaBakchod outstanding !!!!!” followed by “Some "not taking life so seriously" lessons are needed. DESPERATELY!!!!”

Though the actress laughed her guts out at the show and have been doing that on every joke made on her mental abilities since always, Alia visibly raised a question that why to create fuss on something, which is about taking jokes on oneself and enjoying the life.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who is also often made an easy target of jokes due to her curvaceous frame and for being ‘Khamosh’ sarcastically wrote “So nice to see twitter is filled with such angels who point out hypocrisy n never use foul language n have nvr laughed at dirty jokes (haw)” on twitter.

The actress who was also targeted for possessing double standards – Deepika Padukone too took it to twitter and applaud her co-stars and AIB for creating a stupendous show. “The #AIBKnockout is the coolest funniest show I have EVER witnessed!@AllIndiaBakchod @arjunk26 @karanjohar @RajeevMasand,” she wrote.

Karan Johar, who became the severe one to be attacked by most of the criticizers expressed his stance in a single line and quoted “Not your cup of tea...don't drink it!!!”

Though both Ranveer and Arjun seem silent over the rage, the fact that they themselves have raised no objection over the entire ‘roast’ proves their point. When the celebs of such stature in the industry are not putting any objection over the jokes made on them, why people possessing extra ‘grey matter’ are unnecessarily extracting buzz out of it?
